Abstract

The objective of this research is to analyze the performance of an aerated wetland as a post-treatment strategy for anaerobic digestate from the anaerobic co-digestion of bovine manure and whey. The digestate to be treated was characterized by having appropriate nutrients to be used as fertigation, although phytotoxicity conditions it to be partially used. The aerated wetland removes considerably the concentration of chemical oxygen demand (COD) (reduction close to 95 %) with surface organic loads of 10 and 45 g COD/m2d, this post-treatment technique proved to be efficient in treating this type of digestate in terms of COD reduction.
