Abstract

This work evaluated the capacity of early warning indicators (EW) for the detection of a programmed failure in a biogas production process. The failure consisted of a gradual variation in the composition of the substrate. The EW evaluated were volatile acid degrees (VFA), total alkalinity (TA), partial (PA), and intermediate (IA), the ratios of VFA/TA and IA/PA, and the methane content in the biogas. The results show that methane content, TA, VFA, and VFA/TA could not predict the day of process failure. Unlike IA/PA, which managed to predict the failure 5 and 2 days in advance, and CH4/CO2, which had an alarm time of 14 days, which provides considerable time for decision-making in biogas production processes.
